Sir Edmund Hillary became the first man to summit Mount Everest in 1953. Along with his expedition partner Tenzing Norgay he was also accompanied by a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. As one of the sponsors of the 1953 Everest Expedition Rolex gave him the watch in order for it to be tested on his return from the extreme Everest conditions.
